People who carry a gene variation associated with longevity have better brain cognition and are more resilient to aging, new research has found, paving the way for future treatments for brain aging and disease.

“As we move into the world of personalized medicine, it will be really important and useful to know how one’s genetics, lifestyle and environment affect their trajectory for healthy or unhealthy brain aging,” she added.

If you’re a worrier, going to bed earlier could help

Those who feel stressed and anxious all the time might want to try one simple remedy before others: Go to bed earlier. It’s not just a matter of getting a good night’s sleep, however.

Researchers at Binghamton University say that when you go to sleep matters when it comes to fending off “repetitive negative thinking,” according to a post at Eureka Alert.

“Making sure that sleep is obtained during the right time of day may be an inexpensive and easily disseminable intervention for individuals who are bothered by intrusive thoughts,” says one of the researchers for the study published in Cognitive Therapy and Research.

Johns Hopkins: Hearing Problems Lead to Dementia

Seniors who suffer hearing loss are at a higher risk of developing dementia, according to new research by Frank Lin, M.D., an
otolaryngologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

“Compared to individuals with normal hearing, people with mild, moderate, and severe hearing loss, respectively, had a two-three- and five- fold increased risk of developing dementia,” he told Newsmax Health.

And aside from the greater dementia risk, he found that those with hearing problems lost their cognitive skills faster than others – about 35 percent faster. The worse the hearing loss, the faster the rate of cognitive decline, Dr. Lin found.

Study: Sleeping After Learning Improves Memory

Sleeping directly after learning new information may improve your memory, according to a new study.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital researchers closely evaluated 14 participants and found that they were substantially better at remembering information like faces and names of people if they were able to get up to eight hours of sleep afterward.

“We know that many different kinds of memories are improved with sleep. While a couple of studies have looked at how naps might affect our ability to learn new faces and names, no previous studies have looked at the impact of a full night of sleep in between learning and being tested,” corresponding author Dr. Jeanne F. Duffy said in a public release. “We found that when participants were given the opportunity to have a full night’s sleep, their ability to correctly identify the name associated with a face – and their confidence in their answers – significantly improved.”

French gourmets have traditionally shunned hot, spicy food – so they may be a little piqued by a study indicating that curry-loving men have higher testosterone.

Scientists at the highly-respected University of Grenoble have published a report suggesting that regular consumption of chili peppers may raise levels of the hormone, which is believed to make men more adventurous, enterprising and sexually active.

Laurent Begue, one of the authors of the study, said: “These results are in line with a lot of research showing a link between testosterone and financial, sexual and behavioural risk-taking.”
